On June 6th Apple had the WWDC 2022 and it turned out to be a great hit. Not only did they announce updates for iOS 16, MacOS Ventura, iPadOS 16, and WatchOS 9, they also updated the powerful Apple Silicon for Mac called the Apple M2 Chip. Furthermore, what’s great about it is that Apple is placing this new M2 Chip to their best selling Mac, the MacBook Air.
The New MacBook Air 2022 with Apple M2 Chip
Similar to the MacBook Pro 14” and 16”, the MacBook Air M2 got a design upgrade by losing the signature slanted design. Now however, the MacBook Air has the similar squared design to the MacBook Pro with 4 different finishes: Midnight, Space Gray, Silver, and Starlight. With the design changed, they also fit a new bigger 13.6” Liquid Retina Display with the notch to fit in the 1080p FaceTime camera.
Other than the noticeable design and performance, the new MacBook Air also has other feature upgrades. Firstly, the MacBook Air now has a 4 speakers sound system and supports Spatial Audio, combined with the new display it would be a great experience for binging Stranger Things on Netflix.
Secondly, the MacBook Air 2022 can now last longer due to M2 efficiency and now boasts the MagSafe 3 which supports fast charging up to 67W.
What we Love about the new MacBook Air:
Powerful Apple M2 Chip, get more done faster with a more powerful 8-core CPU. Create captivating images and animations with up to a 10-core GPU.
New squared design similar to MacBook Pro, with 4 different finishes: Midnight, Space Gray, Silver, Starlight.
Bigger 13.6” Liquid Retina Display with 500 nits of Brightness with true tone technology.
Four-speaker sound system arrangement with Spatial Audio compatibility while using AirPods 3rd gen, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max
Featured MagSafe 3 with 67W Fast Charging
Although it seems like a great laptop so far, we noticed a couple of things that made the MacBook Air a few steps away from being perfect. First, it’s about its portability. We did see some hope from Apple when the MacBook Pro got a HDMI port and SD card reader. Yet, they didn't bother to put it in the new MacBook Air. Secondly, they mentioned about the fast charging on MacBook Air but if you want it, you have to purchase the 67W power adapter separately because you won’t get it from the box.
What we don’t really like about the MacBook Air 2022:
The new MacBook Air lacks portability, Apple could’ve fit an HDMI port or at least SD Card reader that may convenience for Photographers or Videographers
We know it’s capable of 67W fast charging, but Apple won’t include it on the purchase you have to spend another S$85 for the 67W USB-C power adapter
It could be more colorful like the new iMac M1
Cop or Drop?
We think this MacBook Air 2022 is a cop. First of all, Apple has nailed the design - like what we saw on the MacBook Pro with the new Midnight and Starlight finishes - which is a fresh look for the Air.
However, the real game changer here is the M2 Chip; it packs a Media engine like the M1 Pro on MacBook Pro so you can work on Adobe Illustrator or render 4K or even 8K video on Premiere Pro even faster than the M1. Basically the performance on MacBook Air is almost as good as the MacBook Pro for S$1,000 less.
But what if you don’t have the budget for it or you don’t need the extra performance? Well, Apple will still sell the MacBook Air M1 for S$250 less than the new one so you can replace your faulty MacBook.
